Outro Ego Marketing?

"Ego Marketing is the trap of writing marketing copy to please or flatter yourself, rather than to persuade your target audience. Ego Marketing is a real danger, especially for entrepreneurs, who have to be able to talk about themselves (and usually have many good things to say). Good marketing consists of communicating your unique value to your target market. Ego marketing, on the other hand, makes you feel good at the expense of really communicating with your target.

Ego marketing gets in the way of your sales efforts, reduces the effectiveness of your communication, and in many cases actually turns prospects off. In today's cluttered marketplace, it's hard enough to stand out from the crowd without giving yourself the handicap that comes from ego marketing.

Some forms of ego marketing are fairly easy to spot. Ever been to a Web site or opened a brochure to be met with a "Word from our CEO?” Ever bother to read it? Me neither. Basically, any graphic design or copy (text) that makes you (the author) feel really good is in danger of failing the “ego test.” "
